The evening of Austin’s passing my older son, Alex, said, “I think we should all get counseling”, so I began to look for one covered through our insurance. We were able to get in to see Abby Garcia within a week, when she had a cancellation. Initially, all three of us saw her together. Within a short time, Alex preferred not to go with my husband and I. Jay and I continued to see her for over a year, usually together. One of the first things she shared with us is the reason so many marriages don’t last after the loss of a child, is that you will not be experiencing the same thing at the same time or in the same way. Being aware of that is so important along the way. Dr. Garcia was so good at explaining to us, in a scientific way, what was going on with our heads and bodies concerning our grief. She would give us information about what to be prepared for in the coming weeks and months. I’m not sure how we would have navigated the first year without Dr. Garcia’s help. She also leads group sessions for bereaved parents, although we never attended the group sessions.
