KEYNOTE PRESENTATION: The Meta-Impact of a Child's Passing on and Parents Choosing Loving Activism:

In October 2023, I interviewed Jeff, a father whose son Austin transitioned in what appeared to be a tragic and preventable way. After being dropped at the wrong location during a severe winter storm, Austin’s phone died in the freezing cold. Unable to reach his parents or find help, he froze to death.

That night, I awoke overwhelmed with sadness and outrage. How had we become a world where someone in desperate need could be turned away by so many?

As I reflected, I felt called to search for deeper meaning and possible blessings hidden within tragedy. After sharing Austin’s story with Gary E. Schwartz, PhD, we realized that heartbreaking events can also become wake-up calls—opportunities for greater compassion, awareness, and transformation.

In 2024, while speaking at a Helping Parents Heal conference attended by more than 1,100 parents, I shared the idea that our children in spirit may now be helping to heal the world. In a powerful moment, I sensed countless children in spirit above us—radiating love, joy, and encouragement.

Later, during a Helping Parents Heal webinar, I spoke about the “meta-blessings” that can emerge after a child’s passing:

  • children in spirit continuing to help humanity,
  • parents awakening to deeper compassion and purpose,
  • and others becoming inspired to live with greater love and consciousness.

At that moment, Helping Parents Heal co-founder Elizabeth Boisson shared a phrase she had often heard after her son Morgan’s transition:

“Our connection with the children on the other side will ultimately save the world.”

Over time, she came to deeply understand its meaning.

These experiences have convinced me that even in profound tragedy, there exists the possibility for healing, awakening, and a more compassionate world.
