Tools to help you connect with Spirit
Andrea Courey
We are certainly not left to our own devices when it comes to connecting with our Spirit guides. Just look at the list that follows! It is not complete and probably can never be completed as humans, in their infinite variety and industriousness, come up with different ways to tune in. Try as many as you can. Try what appeals to you. To have any kind of mastery requires practice. Stay encouraged by keeping it fun. Your body will tell you ‘Yes please I’d like more of this’.
I have used all of these techniques yet often I use nothing. I just talk to Spirit and listen for the answer. It comes in a myriad of ways. I hear it best when I’ve tuned out the noise.
These methodologies are in no particular order –
Knowledge through books. Pay particular attention to the books that seem to appear on your path. The book that calls to you at the used book store. The book that is recommended to you more than once. One of my all-time favorites – a book I have given to many people – is Living with Joy by Sanaya Roman. Originally published in 1986, it continues to guide and inspire me. Now, I simply set an intention and open the book to a page I most need to read at that moment. It never fails to inspire. As you move along your individual path to Oneness, let the books that inspire you find new life in the hands of others.
Did you know that every published book is on record in the magnificent library? This library in our Spirit home, holds every piece of written work. So, even if you write a book that almost no one reads, it will be in the Universal library and just by being there, will contribute to the knowledge of the human collective experience.
Walking. I remember walking to school and deliberately noticing the greenery around me, the colours, the smells, the wildlife. Walking a labyrinth is deliberate walking taken to a state of active meditation. It is worth a try. To locate a labyrinth near you: https://labyrinthlocator.org/world-wide-labyrinth-map/
A gratitude walk is also powerful. As you walk, you become present to all the things you see and feel and you consciously thank Spirit for them.
When you walk, you receive. The flow is quite constant. Make sure to have a paper and pen to record what you receive. A gratitude walk that I did over a decade ago is still vivid in my mind. I can recall the colors and the scene as if I was there. This exercise brings us into the present moment without any rituals or prayers. The pace is soft not brisk.
Meditating. Do it every day even if just for 5 minutes. You can help keep yourself on track by having a meditation buddy that you send an emoji to when you’re done. And they can do the same.
The key to staying on track in a silent meditation is to pray. Prayer, an act of love for Spirit and humility of the ego, really, really works. When you pray, you release light. It is seen. It is acknowledged. Make up your own prayer or repeat, with intent, a prayer you were taught. It may be simply one line ‘God is my fortress and my vault’ or it may be elaborate. Know it by heart and say it while meditating. It will help keep your vibration high.
The Breath. Breathwork works. It can take you to states of wellness and high vibration and open you up to Spirit.
I know very little about this modality. I do know, as a cancer survivor, that illness creates shallow breathing. Just correcting that has brought me much healing. It helps to manage the ebb and flow of grief as well.
Pendulum. The pendulum is a learned skill. Practice will help you open your communication to Spirit so much, that it won’t be long before you set the pendulum aside completely and just trust the communication you’re receiving.
The pendulum will surprise you. One time I had the alphabet in front of me and asked the pendulum for the name of one of my guides. ‘I like names’, I explained. ‘It helps me relate better’. Right away the pendulum spelt out R-O-Y. ‘Roy! Thank you. Hello Roy. Nice to meet you Roy. So glad to know you Roy!’
The next day I went to visit my friend and teacher Carole and told her about the pendulum. She began to laugh. ‘Andrea’, she asked, ‘what’s my last name?’ I thought for a split second and began to laugh too. Her last name is Roy. A good lesson for me that our teachers are not just in the invisible but many are right here, right on our path with us. Carole and I met in 1992. We have been friends and she has been a wonderful mentor to me all these years.
Sitting in the Power. The power of Spirit is vast. Huge. Larger than any physical dimension. More loving and wise than anything or anyone human. The power of Spirit lights our way. To consciously Sit in the Power is to consciously acknowledge this and to open the lines of communication. Here’s one possible meditation to help you connect and Sit in the Power.
Sit comfortably. Spine straight. Feet flat on the floor to ground. A few conscious breaths. A short prayer surrounding yourself with Divine light and love. And then repeat ‘I sit in the power. I sit in the power.’ Feel your shoulders relax, your body melt into the chair. Keep saying it. Invite your Spirit guides to come close. This blending is in your hands. Spirit will never give you more than you can handle. The process is simple. Again, simplicity is the key. You may feel your third eye opening. If so, imagine moving aside the curtain. The veil is so thin.
If you have a moment of doubt and find yourself becoming distant from that all-encompassing feeling, just go back and repeat ‘I sit in the power. I sit in the power.’ This short meditation has the power to change your perspective and shift your consciousness toward the light.
Psychometry. Everything carries energy with it. Every organ of the body carries the energy of the vessel that houses it. Every piece of clothing or jewelry carries the energy of the human who wears it. Every leaf carries the energy of its home tree. When you hold a stone while doing Sound Healing, you can later sit with that stone and bring back into your being the high vibrations of the session.
Psychometry is subtle yet it can be a really fun thing to do in a group just to begin touching the waters of energy communication. Invite a small group over. Leave a basket at the door and ask everyone to put a small piece of their jewelry in the basket. Then pass the basket around and have each person describe the owner of that article. If you can see this as play and stay away from the rational mind, the results may surprise you. It’s fun too!
Sound Healing. Oh the power of Sound! So many modalities within Sound that raise vibration. Explore them. Enjoy them. Each session brings you something new.
I have been facilitating Sound journeys for years and am amazed how rapidly after death communication occurs. In addition to our loved ones in Spirit, our guides come through with words, smells, colours, long and short downloads of information. Have your paper and pen at the ready. They bring us signs. They bring us encouragement. They are positive, loving beings and they know us completely. This in itself is so reassuring. Chant, sing, dance, hum - let the high vibration sounds expand your consciousness and connect you to Spirit. Some instruments will resonate more for you. Enjoy the experimentation.
A Time and Place. The simple ritual of creating an appointment to meet on a certain bench at a prearranged time can set up wonderful encounters both with your loved ones in Spirit and your Spirit guides.
This bench can be an actual place in your physical world or it can be a place you’ve created during a visualization. Either way, populate the space with your senses. What’s the weather like? Are the birds singing? Is it warm? Humid? Dry? Where are you? What are you looking at? Is the sun just rising? What about the bench your on? Does it have a cushion or more than one? What is the fabric? The more real you make it, the more you can easily recall it, set it up fully and then invite Spirit to join you.
Writing. Almost every modality involves some writing. You may also simply write a letter, then make an appointment at a specific time and place to be given their response. You may just begin writing nothing much at all and then a shift occurs and the flow happens. Ah what a sweet moment! Enjoy.
Automatic writing is a great gift from Spirit. Just believe. And trust. Let the doubt go and just let the flow happen. If that becomes tough to do, go back to one of the above modalities, centre yourself and dive right back in.
We are beings of light and all of the above is our natural birthright.
