Nicole Niehaus' Second Validation with her son Jack through Mitch Ott

A Reading with Mitch Ott — The Details That Validated Jack’s Presence

When we joined the recent gallery with Mitch Ott, so many specific details came through that, together, they created a series of validations that were incredibly meaningful to us. One of the first details Mitch brought through was something about a scar on the abdomen. He made it clear that it was not the cause of Jack’s passing, but that it had been significant.

The timing of that message was extraordinary. That very morning, before the reading, I had been looking through old photographs of Jack when I suddenly realized that it was exactly seven years to the day since he had undergone emergency surgery for a severe case of appendicitis. Jack’s surgery was anything but routine. Because of massive infection and inflammation, the surgeons were unable to complete the procedure. His colon had actually wrapped around his stomach, and they had to close him back up. Jack spent more than six months dealing with the infection before eventually undergoing another surgery to finally remove his appendix. So when Mitch mentioned a significant abdominal scar on the exact seven-year anniversary of that surgery, it was a very powerful validation for me.

Mitch also brought up the number 27, which is Jack’s current age. Jack would be 27 years old now.

Then Mitch described an event surrounding Jack’s passing that involved a loud party, an event near the water, and Jack being involved in something where people were cheering him on. Jack was on a small island in Thailand attending the Full Moon Party. We have a video of his final hours seeing him jumping rope through fire, surrounded by people cheering and celebrating. It was such a distinctive image of the circumstances surrounding his final hours that hearing Mitch describe the party atmosphere, the water, and people cheering was incredibly significant.  

Mitch then asked if we didn’t have all the details surrounding Jack’s passing, or if there was confusion about what happened. There has always been confusion and a lack of complete information surrounding Jack’s accident because of where it happened. We never received a full account from the small island officials, and there was very little communication or reliable information available to us. Mitch mentioned an injury to the head and being thrown forward, and Jack and his friend were thrown from their rented motorbike when they were hit head-on by what we believe was a truck. Hearing Mitch bring up those specific elements was another powerful validation.

Mitch then brought up a brother and the name Matt. Jack didn’t have a biological brother, but he does now have a brother-in-law. Jack’s sister, Natalya—who he often called Nat—had recently become engaged, and at her engagement party, Jack gave a toast about finally having a brother. Immediately after mentioning the brother and the name Matt, Mitch brought up horses. Natalya and her husband had recently been talking about wanting to have a farm and horses. The combination of the brother reference, the Nat-Matt connection, and then horses was far too specific to feel like a generic description of our family. In fact, Natalya had also recently been told something about horses in a separate reading with another medium.

Then came music and dancing. Music has always been one of the ways we celebrate Jack and feel connected to him. Recently, we were at a concert, and Jack was very much on our minds. We joked and laughed about how Jack would have been watching his dad dance and probably laughing at him. We were intentionally at a RÜFÜS DU SOL concert because they were a favorite of Jack’s and we certainly danced for him. So when Mitch brought through music, dancing, and the feeling of Jack laughing and enjoying himself, it felt especially personal.

And finally, there were the sunglasses. Mitch described Jack handing us sunglasses. That might sound like a small detail, but anyone who knew Jack would understand why it wasn’t small to us. Jack was obsessed with sunglasses. It didn’t matter whether it was winter, fall, spring, or summer—he was almost always wearing them. He had countless pairs and absolutely loved them. What made this even more meaningful was that another medium had previously brought through the exact same message: Jack was handing me sunglasses.

When all of these details come together—the scar on the exact anniversary of his surgery, the number 27, the party near the water and people cheering, the uncertainty surrounding his accident, the head injury and being thrown forward, the brother/Nat-Matt connection, horses, music and dancing, and finally the sunglasses—it becomes very difficult for me to look at them as isolated details. For us, these are the little pieces that make us stop and say, That’s Jack.

We are continually grateful for every opportunity we have to hear from Jack through a medium, whether in person or in a gallery. We celebrate all of the amazing signs he sends us, but there is something especially powerful about hearing those details come through someone with such an incredible gift. It is, quite literallly a little shot of stardust to the heart.
